Spas Catering to the Grey Market

November 28th, 2011

Susie Ellis gave Spa Finder an “A” in terms of her 2011 Aging…Raging…Pain Relief Treatments for spas in her end of year review, yet only gives the spa industry a “D” for our response to this change in market demographics, with very few menus with larger print, very little attention to better lighting or easier to navigate corridors, and not nearly as much mention of pain relief on menus as she anticipated. For the full story visit http://blog.spafinder.com/spa-industry/agingraging/, but what is it that is holding the spa industry back from accommodating this market segment? Are we controlled by Spa Designers, Graphic Artists, or are the Spa Consultants and Spa Managers just living in a “safe place” and refusing to push the boundaries of tradition. Seem to me that the writing is on the wall, and we need to wake up and smell the roses - and cater to the needs of our customers, rather than our own egos!

Employing a Spa Consultant

November 25th, 2011

The employment of a professional Spa Consultanct can result in major cost savings for a spa project. In order to maximise this saving it is essential that the Client is clear with what they expect from the Consultant. The client should prepare a Consulting Brief for the Spa Consultant. This brief should contain; a company profile, the scope of work, list of deliverables, timeframe, any special requests / conditions that may apply, and the deadline for receipt of proposals.

“It is quite acceptable to ask a consultant to sign a confidentiality agreement before you give them your consulting brief”

Health and Wellness Tourism in Thailand

November 22nd, 2011

Euromonitor released a report on the Thailand Helath & Wellness Tourism industry in mid 2011. They report that during 2010, health and wellness tourism recovered from the negative growth recorded during 2009, increasing in value by 4%. Spas and medical tourism are the key health and wellness tourism categories and both are heavily promoted by the Thai government. The Thai government continued to develop spas and medical services in order to meet international standards with the ultimate aim of making Thailand a major medical tourism hub in Asia, a campaign which has been successful since it began in 2004.
